Healthy Shamrock Shake

Let's celebrate St. Patrick's Day with this Healthy Shamrock Shake that I found at the end of a plant-based rainbow. 🙂 Thick and creamy, just like the original, but this Shamrock Smoothie is packed with fruit and hidden vegetables instead of a ton of sugar.

HEALTHY SHAMROCK SHAKE

OK, I have to be honest. I've never actually had a Shamrock Shake. It's a McDonald's thing, right? I just know that it's green and probably full of a bunch of refined sugars that we shouldn't be drinking.

So considering I have no idea what it should taste like, the starting criteria for my version of a Healthy Shamrock Shake was that it had to be green. And shake-like.

I did learn after some research that it is a green coloured vanilla shake with a bit of mint added. I can totally do this.

VEGAN SHAMROCK SHAKE - INGREDIENTS

Using frozen bananas adds to both the sweetness and ice cream quality of my banana mint smoothie.

No dairy required!

Frozen bananas in a container

Frozen bananas transform into a soft-serve like mixture, perfect for a creamy plant based shamrock shake.

This is using my run-of-the-mill blender, by the way. You don't need any fancy equipment to get this consistency.

Instead of weird food colouring, I use nature!

Spinach leaves will lend a beautiful pale green colour without leaving any strong taste behind.

You would not know that there are THREE generous handfuls of spinach in this frothy treat.

Fresh spinach leaves

Fresh cucumber is another great addition for being sneaky.

It has a mild flavour that makes this shake easy to drink. Lots and lots of hydration from cucumbers. That moisture is so good for the skin in these dry winter temperatures.

If you look into the shamrock shake nutrition facts the McDonald's version has a whopping 100 grams of sugar in it.

Holy crapola!

This version contains under 20 grams and that is nature's sugar from the bananas which also has protein, fiber, and potassium. Real food has all kinds of benefits.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Make it a healthier one. 🙂

FAQ'S, TIPS + SUBSTITUTIONS

  • Is McDonald's Shamrock Shake healthy? That's a big nope, guys. It's over 800 calories of nothingness. This version is MUCH better. Trust.
  • How much sugar is in a Shamrock Shake? The large size has 113 grams of sugar. O.M.Gsh. The Honour System version? Less than 20. Decision made.
  • TIP! Freeze super ripe bananas for the sweetest taste. Peel and break into smaller pieces before freezing!
  • If you are looking for a mint chocolate chip milkshake, substitute the vanilla protein for a chocolate protein powder!
